Drive Safe This Holiday With Campanella's 5-Point Winter Car Maintenance Checklist

Does cold weather make you lose tire pressure? What about brake performance? If these are concerns you have about your vehicle this winter, you’re in the right place.

Your car deserves a nice holiday, too! Having a reliable vehicle during the winter months provides peace of mind and a relaxing holiday season. Poor maintenance has a negative impact on vehicle performance in cold and snowy weather.

Here are five common car concerns during winter months and what you can do to prevent them:

1. Coolant System

Coolant prevents your engine from freezing in the winter and overheating in the summer. It cools down your engine and operates your heating system. Any blockage in your coolant will prevent heat from working—during the cold months, this is not ideal!

Did you know? Our technicians at Paul Campanella’s Auto & Tire Center check your coolant system as part of our courtesy inspection process. Take advantage of our multi-point inspection today by scheduling your visit.

2. Tire Pressure

Your vehicle’s tire pressure can fluctuate because of temperature changes. Tire pressure generally drops one to two PSI (per square inch) with every 10 degrees Celsius the temperature drops. Each car has a manufacturer recommendation for tire pressure. You should be able to find the recommendation in your vehicle’s owner manual, on stickers on the door frames of the front driver and passenger doors, and the fuel door.

Incorrect tire pressure causes premature tire wear and affects their performance.

3. Brakes

Can brakes wear quickly in the cold? If you keep your brakes in good condition, harsh climates should have no effect on their performance. If your brake health is poor, slick and snowy roads will have a negative effect on your vehicle and those around you.

Getting your vehicle inspected routinely—ideally, with every oil change—helps you stay aware of your brake health so unexpected repairs don’t catch you by surprise!

4. Cabin Air Filter

If you do not routinely replace your cabin air filter, consider doing so before the cold sets in! Pollen, dirt, and bugs collect in the filter over time. This debris restricts airflow in your filter and results in heating and cooling issues. Do you have a lot of trees around your home? Dirt and debris from trees lands in your filter and may result in more frequent cabin filter replacement. Save yourself a chilly car ride and get your filter inspected today!

5. Windshield Wipers

Unless you live in an area that receives constant heavy snowfall, special winter wipers are not a necessity. If your wiper blades are intact and healthy, your windshield wipers should cause any issues during a storm. Reliable wipers are crucial for vehicles in harsh weather. Making sure your fluid is full and your wiper blades intact is necessary for snowy-weather driving. If you would still like to purchase winter wipers for your vehicle, our service team at Paul Campanella’s Auto & Tire Center can order them for you.

Take Advantage of Our Courtesy Inspection Today!

Anyone can take advantage of our courtesy digital inspection at one of our five locations in Pennsylvania and Delaware. This inspection is the first service we perform on your vehicle when you bring it in. And it comes at no charge to you! Any services we recommend afterwards are based off this inspection. We prioritize safety and transparency when it comes to the lives of you and your loved ones.

Our 26-point inspection includes a surface examination of:

  • Exterior and windshield
  • Instrument panel functionality
  • Battery health
  • Factory specified maintenance
  • Timing belt (if applicable)
  • Under hood fluids
  • Drive belts and accessories
  • Coolant hoses
  • Tires
  • Alignment
  • Front and rear brakes
  • Front and rear suspension
  • Engine and transmission mounts
  • Differential and transfer case fluids (if applicable)

The courtesy inspection is digital and comes with photos provided by our technicians. You receive a report via text or email when the inspection is complete.

Keep in mind, this courtesy inspection is different from a state inspection. Depending on which state you live in, a state inspection has different requirements and more points. Just because your vehicle passes our surface inspection doesn’t mean it will pass a state inspection. We do provide recommendations based off state regulations when reviewing your digital inspection.
