5 Essential Back to School Car Care Tips

August 14, 2023

With school starting in a few short weeks, it’s easy to put auto repair on the back burner. However, it's crucial not to overlook one essential aspect of back-to-school readiness - your car's condition. A reliable vehicle provides a safe and comfortable commute and prevents potential breakdowns and expensive repairs.

Here’s an auto care checklist you may want to add to your school shopping list this fall:

1. Tire Inspection

Your car's tires are a critical safety component since they make contact with the road. To look at your tire health, start by inspecting the tread depth; if it's worn out, consider replacing the tires. Properly inflated tires improve fuel efficiency and handling, so check the tire pressure regularly, including the spare tire.  Inspect your tires regularly for signs of damage, like bulges or cuts, that can lead to blowouts and accidents.

2. Routine Maintenance Check

Before the school year kicks off, take your car for a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic. An auto care provider will check your engine, brakes, suspension, and other critical components to anticipate possible safety issues or failure. Addressing any potential issues early can save you from unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs down the road.

3. Change Oil and Fluids

Paul Campanella's Auto & Tire Center recommends changing your oil every 5,000 miles. Depending on your vehicle's make, model, and mileage, oil change intervals may vary. Always follow your auto care provider's recommendations. You should also check and top off other fluids, such as coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid.

We also provide free tire rotations with every oil change. Schedule your visit here.

4. Battery Test

Few things are more frustrating than a dead car battery, especially when you're already running late for class. Bring your car to your auto care provider for a battery test. If it's old or shows signs of weakness, replace it before it becomes a major inconvenience.

Paul Campanella's Auto & Tire Center provides free battery tests as part of our courtesy inspection process. Schedule your visit here.

5. Check the Lights

Your vehicle's exterior lights must function properly at all times to create a safe driving environment, especially during low visibility. Have your auto care provider inspect exterior lights--headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights. Replace any burnt-out bulbs promptly to maintain optimal visibility on the road.

Paul Campanella's Auto & Tire Center provides light checks as part of our courtesy inspection process. We also provide headlight restoration services for clouded lights. Schedule your visit here.
