Car Noises That Should Raise The Red Flag

March 20, 2015

Below are five car noises that should raise the red flag because they signal a more serious problem.

#1. A Car Noise that Sounds Like the blade of a snowplow on pavement or a Spinning Squeak

This car noise is likely due to brake pads that have worn completely through, causing them to press directly against the rotors. Worn brake pads could make it difficult to stop your car, and might even lead to rotor damage. If you hear this noise it’s time to consider break repair.

#2.Whining or Groaning When Turning the Steering Wheel

Whining or groaning when turning can indicate that your power-steering pump is failing. Problems like these are serious because your steering could fail. If you notice this car noise, stop driving immediately and have your power-steering pump checked. Schedule an appointment with us, we can help you.

#3.Tapping That Sounds Like a Washing Machine Agitator

A rod inside your engine knocking against the block might be the culprit. Fortunately, this can be repaired. Have your vehicle repaired immediately, even if it requires getting a tow truck. Continuing to drive could result in your vehicle becoming completely disabled, and require you to install a new engine to get it up and running again. If the rod forces itself completely through the engine block, you could be facing a large repair bill.

#4. The Car Noise That Sounds Like Fingernails Scraping On a Chalkboard When Starting Your Vehicle

This likely means you have a worn or loose accessory drive belt due to age or excessive wear. Have it replaced as soon as possible to avoid being stranded.

#5. Drumming Underneath Your Vehicle that Increases With Speed

A car noise that sounds like drumming coming from underneath your vehicle could mean a broken or damaged universal joint or driveshaft bushing. Be careful, this sound is a precursor to the driveshaft coming completely off your car while driving, thereby bringing it to an instant halt. Avoid this dangerous condition by having a full inspection of your suspension system performed immediately.

If you notice any of these noises, contact us. Our expert auto mechanics will quickly assess the problem and help you get back on the road again as safely as possible.
