Are You Ready for Bad Weather

January 4, 2014

For four-season lovers, fall is a time to enjoy the golden leaves and winter is the season for frolicking in the snow. For everyone else, the worst seasons of the year are just periods you have to get through. Whatever you feel about the upcoming months, your car should be prepared to withstand whatever Mother Nature dishes out. Here are a few helpful tips.

Replace your windshield wiper blades.

Your windshield wipers are all that stand between you and bad visibility while inclement weather. If they start streaking during the first rain of the fall, it’s time to replace them. In any case, they’re inexpensive enough that you should replace them every six months to a year. While you’re at it, check the spray nozzles of your windshield washers. Are they blocked? If yes, use a pin or to clear them.

Install winter tires.

If you want more traction in the winter, invest in a set of winter tires. The softer rubber, deeper treads, and occasional hard studs provide the firmest grip during icy and snowy conditions. You’ll not only be able to travel the roads with more confidence but can brake more solidly and avoid skidding.

Prepare for the Worst

You never know when traffic or bad weather will force you to stay in your car for hours or overnight. For such cases, pack some emergency items. Include a space blanket, several energy bars, extra cash, small containers of water, and a winter-weight sleeping bag. Include extra winter clothes and winter boots in case you have to leave your car and head for the nearest shelter.

The best thing you can do to prepare your car is to take it in for an inspection. As your Wilmington, DE car repair shop, we’ll check your battery, heater, brakes, defroster, anti-freeze, and other car systems to make sure they’re working properly. We can also give you tips on how to improve your driving during fall and winter weather.
