5 Tips for Wakefulness — Keeping Yourself and Your Car on the Road

The holidays are not far away! And for many people that means road trips. Campanella’s would like to take a moment to remind you to stay safe during your travels, and to keep your car safely on the road.

Keeping alert while driving is a major key to driving safety. Here are 5 tips to keep you awake and your car rolling down the highway, getting you to your destination safe and sound.

Get adequate rest

This tip may sound simple but its importance can’t be overstated. Driving while fatigued should be avoided at all costs. If you know you are going to start out on a trip, do whatever you need to do to ensure you get a good night’s sleep the night before leaving.

That said, sometimes the act of driving itself can cause a person to become drowsy, particularly on long trips. Some call this phenomenon road hypnotism. Here are four more tips to prevent that from happening to you.

Keep your eyes active

Keep your eyes on the road ahead of you but avoid staring into one place. Instead, scan the road ahead of you, changing your field of focus every few seconds from distant to near, and from near to distant. From time to time make quick scans of your instrumentation. Keeping your eyes active will do much to keep you alert.

Drive during the day

Studies show that more road fatalities occur between the hours normally reserved for sleep (from midnight to 8am) than any other period. Even if you feel safely awake, others may not be. And whenever you are on the road, like it or not, you are sharing that road with others. So avoid these travel hours whenever possible.

Take frequent breaks

Keeping your eyes active while driving is helpful but sometimes it’s not enough. It is invigorating to move your entire body. Pull into a rest stop, get out, stretch, take a short walk. You may be just a few minutes later getting to your destination, but you’ll arrive safe… and rested.

Avoid heavy meals

Heavy meals tend to make us tired, particularly when we remain seated for long periods of time after eating. So, to avoid becoming drowsy behind the wheel, it’s better to stop more often and eat smaller meals than to stop rarely and eat a big meal.

So keep the rubber side down and your eyelids up!
